Roof cleaning in Liverpool

We softwash roofs to remove moss, lichen and debris. It is a low-pressure treatment, so your roof is cleaned rather than blasted.

Why roofs get green

Roofs are damp, shaded and rarely looked at, which is exactly what moss and lichen like. Roofs that face away from the sun, sit under trees or sit close to a neighbouring building tend to go green first.

It is not only about looks. Moss holds moisture against the surface and can build up in the gaps and valleys, where it may block the flow of water towards the gutter. Cleaning it off helps both the appearance and the life of the roof.

Softwash, not pressure

Roofs should not be jet-washed. High pressure can damage the surface, and it is the wrong job for delicate materials. We use a softwash instead, a low-pressure treatment that lifts moss, lichen and staining without harming what is underneath.

The same approach is used on render, which is why the two services often go together on a house that has both a green roof and stained walls.

The result is a roof that looks cleaner from the street and has less moisture sitting on it. If you are thinking of selling, a clean roof and clean walls can change first impressions before anyone has reached the front door.

What is included

The online quote asks how much of the roof you would like treated, from front and back through to the side pitches. Debris is cleared as part of the job.

  • Moss and lichen treated and removed
  • Debris cleared from the roof surface
  • Front and back, main pitches, or the side pitches too
  • Conservatory roofs, glass or polycarbonate
  • Fascias and soffits cleaned down on request

Roof and gutters together

Moss and debris from a roof end up in the gutters below. If you are cleaning one, it usually makes sense to do the other. A clean roof over blocked gutters just moves the problem a few feet.

For most Liverpool homes, gutters need clearing once a year, and twice under trees. Roofs do not need it as often, but a roof under trees will tend to go green again sooner.

Fascias and soffits sit right at the roofline and collect the same dirt, so we can clean them down on the same visit. A clean roof above grey fascias can look unfinished.

Common questions

Roof cleaning questions

Is softwash safe for my roof?

Softwashing is a low-pressure treatment, designed so delicate surfaces are cleaned without being damaged. It is why we use it on roofs and render rather than a jet wash. We are also fully insured on every job.

Will the moss come back?

Moss tends to return over time on any damp, shaded roof, particularly under trees. How quickly depends on your roof and its surroundings. A clean roof is easier to keep clear, but we would not promise it never comes back.

Can you clean a conservatory roof?

Yes, we clean conservatory roofs, whether glass or polycarbonate. Mention it when you ask for a quote and we will include it, ideally on the same visit as your windows.
